The upcoming television anime *Hōkago no Idol ni wa Himitsu ga Aru* (After-School Idol Has a Secret) has released its first teaser promotional video, introducing the voices of its four principal characters ahead of its April 2027 premiere. The new footage, released October 9, features Hizashi Hiruno, voiced by Reiji Kawashima, and Rei Kuromiya, voiced by Hikaru Tono, alongside Sakura Akai and Sora Konno. The romantic comedy adapts Amane Kashiko's manga, currently serialized through Hakusensha's *Young Animal Web*. The anime adaptation was initially announced September 28, alongside its first teaser visual, cast, and production staff. ## A school romance involving an idol with a secret The story follows Hizashi Hiruno, a diligent but socially awkward first-year high school student whose classmate happens to be a genuine celebrity. Rei Kuromiya is a popular idol admired for her appearance, academic achievements, and seemingly flawless personality. To her classmates, she's practically untouchable. However, Rei has a secret that nobody else knows. When Hizashi discovers it by chance, the two begin spending time together after school, gradually developing a relationship that goes beyond their usual interactions as classmates. The series builds its romantic comedy around the contrast between Rei's polished public image and the more ordinary teenage experiences she shares with Hizashi. The newly released teaser offers an early opportunity to hear the characters' voices and get a sense of the adaptation's atmosphere. ## Reiji Kawashima and Hikaru Tono lead the cast Four principal cast members have been confirmed: - **Reiji Kawashima** as Hizashi Hiruno, a hardworking student who struggles with self-confidence. - **Hikaru Tono** as Rei Kuromiya, a talented idol balancing her entertainment career with school life. - **Iori Noguchi**, a member of the real-world idol group =LOVE, as Sakura Akai, a senior member of Rei's idol group, Aiiro Impulse. - **Ami Maeshima** as Sora Konno, another Aiiro Impulse member known for her playful personality. The casting of Noguchi adds an interesting connection to the series' subject matter, bringing an active idol performer into a story about the entertainment industry. Hikaru Sato directs the anime at animation studio Gekkou, with Fumihiko Shimo overseeing series composition and scripts. Character designs are handled by Kibidango No. 14, while Satoru Kosaki and MONACA are responsible for the music. The production is being overseen by Ryo Aizawa of Starry Cube. ## Original manga reaches Volume 10 this October The anime is based on Amane Kashiko's romantic comedy manga, published by Hakusensha through *Young Animal Web*. To celebrate the adaptation, the October 9 issue of *Young Animal* includes a congratulatory message from Kashiko and a special reprint of the manga's first chapter. The manga's tenth collected volume is also scheduled for release in Japan on October 29, 2026. The series is licensed in English by Yen Press, so that gives international readers an opportunity to explore the original story before the anime premieres. ## When does After-School Idol premiere? *Hōkago no Idol ni wa Himitsu ga Aru* is scheduled to begin broadcasting in Japan in April 2027.
