Originally released for the PlayStation Portable in Japan in 2010, *Fate/Extra* was the first RPG in the wider Fate series. *Record* rebuilds that game with revised character designs, modern visuals, new Japanese voice work and an expanded version of its story.

The remake also throws out the original game’s divisive rock-paper-scissors combat. Battles now use customizable decks built from Command Cards. Attack cards deal damage, Guard cards reinforce the player’s shield and Skill cards provide abilities that vary between Servants.

Players can acquire additional commands from treasure chests and powerful enemies while exploring the Arena. Three Servants are available to choose from: Saber, Archer and Caster. Each has a distinct set of abilities and requires a different approach to combat.

The story returns to SE.RA.PH, a digital world created by a supercomputer hidden on the moon. A total of 128 Masters enter its Moon Holy Grail War, each partnered with a Servant based on a figure from history or legend. The winner receives the Holy Grail and its ability to grant any wish. Losing carries the slightly less appealing reward of death.

Players take the role of an amnesiac Master forced into the tournament. Progress involves investigating opposing Servants, uncovering their true identities and learning their weaknesses before meeting them in one-on-one elimination battles.

A physical limited edition includes a SteelBook case, an art book containing more than 100 pages and a three-disc soundtrack. PlayStation players can also purchase a Digital Deluxe Edition containing cosmetic costumes, arranged music from the original game, a digital art book and a digital soundtrack.

After six years of trailers, development updates and long stretches of silence, *Fate/Extra Record* finally has a firm date. More importantly, its rebuilt combat looks like a genuine reconsideration of the PSP game instead of a prettier version of the same strange system.
