*Hunter’s Moon*, a first-person folk-horror game based on the history of English witch hunts, [will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on Oct. 25 in North America](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/09/03/hunters-moon-an-immersive-historical-folk-horror-launches-october-26-on-ps5/?ref=morganyte.com).

Developed by independent studio Twin Swans, the game follows Lilith Thorne, a woman accused of witchcraft and hunted through a rural English village during the 17th century. The entire story unfolds over a single night beneath a full moon.

Lilith must avoid the Witchfinder General, the local magistrate and a huntsman while searching the village, forests and surrounding moors for safety. She has no arsenal for mowing down enemies. Survival depends on stealth, careful exploration and knowing when to stay out of sight.

One of the game’s central mechanics allows players to eavesdrop through windows. Listening to conversations can reveal warnings, advice, useful items and other information that may help Lilith survive the night.

Twin Swans says the mechanic was inspired by immersive theater, where audiences move through a physical space and discover pieces of a larger story for themselves. More than 100 fully voiced characters populate the village, each dealing with the effects of war, poverty and local paranoia.

The horror comes from the villagers and their beliefs rather than confirmed supernatural creatures. Writer and director Alicia Contestabile said the game examines how ordinary people can become terrifying when fear and superstition take control.

Its setting draws particular inspiration from Matthew Hopkins, the self-appointed Witchfinder General who carried out witch hunts in England during the 1640s. Hopkins and his associate John Stearne were responsible for sending numerous accused people to the gallows.

Contestabile began writing the project as a screenplay in 2019 while working at Crows Crows Crows. She later founded Twin Swans to develop it as a game. Members of the studio have previously worked on *The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe*, *The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope*, *The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt* and *Signalis*.

Historical horror frequently gives in to the temptation of adding a real ghost or demon behind everything. *Hunter’s Moon* appears more interested in the uglier answer. Lilith is surrounded by frightened human beings who have already decided she is guilty, and no monster is required to make that situation horrifying.

*Hunter’s Moon* launches Oct. 25 in North America. It arrives Oct. 26 in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
