Taipei Game Show has announced the 45 finalists for its 2027 Indie Game Award, recognizing independent developers from around the world ahead of next January's gaming exhibition in Taiwan.

According to the organizers' October 14 announcement, this year's competition attracted 731 entries from 53 countries and regions, with the final selection representing developers from 20 regions.

The finalists include teams from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, and India, alongside developers from other parts of the world.

Among the more recognizable names are Ratatan and titles associated with the OPUS series, but the competition also highlights smaller independent teams and student creators.

The winners will be showcased during Taipei Game Show 2027, scheduled for January 21–24.

## Indie Game Award 2027 Draws Hundreds of International Submissions

The Indie Game Award has become an important part of Taipei Game Show's efforts to promote independent development.

For its 2027 edition, the competition received hundreds of entries spanning different countries, development backgrounds, and game genres.

The final selection represents approximately 6.2% of the total submissions, illustrating how competitive the selection process was.

However, the significance of the awards extends beyond the numbers. The finalists offer a look at independent development across a range of markets, including teams that may not have the marketing resources or international visibility of larger publishers.

For readers interested in discovering games outside the usual release calendars, the finalist selection offers a useful starting point.

## Ratatan and OPUS: Prism Peak Lead a Diverse Field

Among the finalists is Ratatan, the rhythm-action game from Japanese developer Ratata Arts.

The project attracted considerable attention during development, raising more than ¥219 million through crowdfunding. It is nominated for Best Audio, a fitting category for a game built around musical rhythm.

### Ratatan

Three Award Nominations

### OPUS: Prism Peak

SIGONO · Taiwan

A narrative adventure following a photographer stranded in a mysterious world. OPUS: Prism Peak received nominations for Best Narrative, Best Audio, and Best Visual Art.

Other notable finalists include MOUSE: P.I. For Hire, nominated for Best Audio and Best Visual Art, and Vampire Crawlers, nominated for Best Innovation.

The range of nominees shows how the competition brings together different approaches to independent game development, from rhythm games and narrative adventures to experimental mechanics and stylized action.

## Smaller Asian Studios and Student Developers Get Their Moment

Some of the most interesting nominations come from developers who may be less familiar to international audiences.

Thailand's Bit Egg Inc. earned a Best Audio nomination for Lost and Found Co.. The game combines hidden-object gameplay with character-driven storytelling and office decoration, offering a different kind of experience from the action-focused titles in the competition.

Brazil's GHOSTLESS, developed by Coffeenauts, is nominated for both Best Narrative and Best Social Impact. According to the organizers, the game explores subjects including artificial intelligence, human identity, technological ethics, and trust.

The student category is equally noteworthy.

Thailand's Wethmon Team is nominated for We Are Gum, while Taiwan is represented by Syntax:Overload from Tallen games and SLAVE CARD from Bunny Beats. South Korea's APES is also nominated for WHERE TO?.

These nominations matter because the competition offers emerging developers a chance to gain international recognition alongside more established studios.

## Taiwan's Indie Developers Make a Strong Showing

Taipei Game Show reports that ten Taiwanese development teams reached the final round.

Beyond OPUS: Prism Peak, the selection includes Rubinite from CUP DOG GAMES, nominated for Best Design, and Selfie Worm from Straight Banana, nominated for Best Innovation.

Selfie Worm has already attracted attention on the international exhibition circuit, having been selected for Tokyo Game Show's Selected Indie 80 and nominated for Sense of Wonder Night.

The strong Taiwanese representation is especially relevant given Taipei Game Show's role in connecting local developers with publishers, industry professionals, and international audiences.

Organizers say they have helped 35 Taiwanese indie teams participate in overseas gaming events this year, including exhibitions in Japan, Brazil, South Korea, and Canada.
