Key Takeaways

  • Chernin will lead film and TV adaptations of both Embark games.
  • Embark’s creative teams will work with the production company.
  • No cast or release dates have been announced.

Nexon has partnered with Chernin Entertainment to develop film and television adaptations of ARC Raiders and The Finals, with Chernin serving as lead producer on both properties.

Variety reported the deal, which Nexon details in its Japanese announcement. The company says several studios and production companies competed for the opportunity.

If Chernin’s name isn’t familiar, its work probably is. The production company has credits including Planet of the Apes, Hidden Figures and Ford v Ferrari.

There are still some fairly big blanks, though. Nexon’s announcement doesn’t name a cast, director or release date, or explain which game will become a film, a series, or both.

Two Very Different Worlds to Work With

ARC Raiders has a fairly obvious starting point for a screen adaptation: scavengers trying to survive on a future Earth overrun by hostile machines. Other Raiders can be just as dangerous. There’s plenty of room for a story about people who need one another but have good reasons to be suspicious.

The Finals is the stranger prospect, and arguably the more interesting one to figure out. Its virtual combat game show turns destruction into entertainment.

An adaptation could follow the contestants, explore the people running the show, or get into what an audience wants from that kind of spectacle. None of those story directions has been announced.

Embark will have a role in shaping the projects. Founder and CEO Patrick Söderlund says the studio’s creative teams will work closely with Chernin.

For now, we know who’s taking on the adaptations. What they’ll actually do with these worlds is the part we’re still waiting to see.
